Find a Panettone (Milanese Christmas cake) in a bakery or shop. Year-round in pastry shops, peak in December. Photograph the dome cake.

Spot a panino (Tuscan sandwich)

Find a Tuscan panino (often porchetta, prosciutto and pecorino on a soft schiacciata bread) at a shop like All'Antico Vinaio. Photograph the sandwich.

Spot a panino or supplì

Find a panino (Italian sandwich) or a fried supplì (rice-and-ragù croquette) at a counter or in someone's hand. Photograph it before the first bite.

Spot a papal flag

Find a yellow-and-white papal flag with the crossed-keys emblem (Vatican area, religious shops, in front of churches). Photograph it.

Spot a pasta plate

Find a plate of pasta on a trattoria table or in a restaurant window (cacio e pepe, carbonara, amatriciana, gricia, the four Roman classics). Photograph the plate.

Spot a pecorino cheese wheel

Find a Tuscan pecorino cheese wheel in a cheese-shop window or market stall. Photograph the wax-rimmed wheel.

Spot a piazza statue with pigeons

Find any major Roman statue (Bernini's Four Rivers, Marcus Aurelius on the Capitoline) with pigeons perched on it. Photograph the irreverent gathering.

Spot a Ponte Vecchio jewellery window

On the Ponte Vecchio find a jewellery-shop window with gold rings, brooches or Florentine cameo work. Photograph the window.

Spot a Quadrilatero gold gate

In the Quadrilatero della Moda find a fashion-house's gilded gate or marble entrance (Versace, Prada in Via della Spiga). Photograph the entrance.

Spot a Renaissance fresco facade

Find a building with painted Renaissance frescoes on the exterior facade (Borgo Albizi has examples). Photograph the painting.

Spot a Rialto market stall

Walk into the Rialto fish or fruit market and find a stall with octopus, sardines or stacked vegetables. Photograph the catch.

Spot a Roman artichoke (carciofo)

Find a carciofo alla romana (Roman-style artichoke) on a trattoria menu or counter. Photograph the silver-green flower.

Spot a Roman cobblestone (sampietrino)

Find a sampietrino, the small black basalt cube Rome's streets are paved with. Photograph a stretch of road close-up.

Spot a Roman laundry line

Look up in Trastevere or Monti and find laundry strung between two windows across a narrow street. Photograph the line.

Spot a Roman ruin in everyday use

Find Roman ruins built into modern life: a column embedded in a wall, a temple foundation under a building, a statue in a hotel lobby. Photograph the time-layered shot.

Spot a Sempione park view

Walk into Parco Sempione (behind the castle) and find the Arco della Pace (Arch of Peace) at the far end. Photograph the arch from the park.

Spot a striped-shirt gondolier

Find a gondolier in his uniform: striped Breton shirt, dark trousers, straw hat with a ribbon. Photograph him at the oar.

Look up between two narrow houses and find laundry strung across the calle. Photograph the line.
