Challenges (19)
Bruges kick-off
The hunt begins! Find a typical Bruges backdrop (a stepped gable, a cobblestone alley, a swan on the canal) and take a group photo with the whole team in shot.
Checkpoint: Markt square
Navigate to the Markt, the central square of Bruges, and check in at the foot of the Belfry.
Belfry tower line-up
Stand back so the entire Belfry tower fits above the team in a single shot. Bonus if you can frame the gabled houses on either side too.
Trivia: Belfry height
The Belfry of Bruges is roughly how many metres tall (within five metres is fine)?
Answers: 83 / 82 / 84 / 85 / 80 / 81
Checkpoint: Burg Square
Navigate to the Burg, the smaller square one block east of the Markt, and check in.
City Hall facade pose
The Bruges Stadhuis on the Burg is one of the oldest Gothic city halls in Europe. Line the team up so the carved facade fills the background and take a group photo.
Trivia: Holy Blood crusade
The Basilica of the Holy Blood claims its relic of Christ's blood was brought back to Bruges in the 12th century from a Crusade. Which Crusade number (a digit or "Second")?
Answers: 2 / 2nd / Second / second / II / ii
Checkpoint: Rozenhoedkaai
Navigate to the Rozenhoedkaai (Rosary Quay), the most photographed corner in Bruges, and check in at the canal-side fence.
Postcard canal shot
At Rozenhoedkaai: take the classic Bruges postcard shot, the team in the foreground with the canal, the Belfry and the brick towers behind. Be patient, the spot is busy but the angle is unbeatable.
Chocolate shop window pose
Bruges has more chocolate shops than streets. Find one with a wild window display (sculpted shoes, animals, anatomy) and take a group photo posing like the chocolate is real.
Trivia: Bruges chocolatiers
Bruges has roughly how many chocolate shops in the old town (within ten is fine)?
Answers: 50 / 40 / 45 / 55 / 60
Waffle moment
Find a Belgian waffle stand, order a round and take a photo with everyone taking the first bite at the same time. Powdered sugar everywhere is encouraged.
Beer house cheers
Find a Bruges beer house (De Garre, 't Brugs Beertje) and take a group toast photo with Trappist or Belgian abbey beers raised. Non-drinkers raise a fruit beer or a Hoegaarden Radler.
Checkpoint: Minnewater
Navigate to the Minnewater (Lake of Love) at the southern edge of the old town and check in by the swans.
Swan portrait
The Minnewater is full of white swans. Take a group photo with at least one swan clearly visible. Do not chase them, they win.
Stepped gable count
Find three different stepped-gable facades in a single walk and take a photo with the team in front of each. Compile the three shots into one collage at the end.
Local Bruges tip
Convince a local Bruges resident to share a tip about the city. Take a photo with your impromptu guide and remember the tip.
Canal bridge selfie
Stand on any bridge over a Bruges canal and take a group selfie with the water clearly below and behind the team.
Bruges finale
Final challenge. Find a beautiful Bruges spot and take an amazing closing group photo. Proost from Brugge!
Frequently asked questions
Three to four hours covers the central loop from the Markt to the Burg to Rozenhoedkaai and the Minnewater at a relaxed pace, with chocolate and waffle stops along the way. Bruges is tiny, the whole old town fits inside a one-square-kilometre walking circle, so most of the time goes into photo angles, not transit.
Yes, but it takes a real chunk of time. The Belfry climb is 366 steps and a typical visit including queue is forty-five minutes to an hour. The challenge in this hunt only asks for a photo from the base of the tower, which keeps the loop moving. Add the climb separately if you want the view.
The historic centre is cobblestoned everywhere, which is rough on heels and modest on strollers. Sneakers, flats or boots are the safe call. The route is otherwise flat, so once you have the right shoes the hunt is easy on energy.
Late afternoon, an hour before sunset, gives golden light on the brick gables and Rozenhoedkaai. Mornings (before 10) are quieter for crowd-free photos but the light is harder. Bruges in winter has fog on the canals that looks straight out of a Bruegel painting if you can take the cold.
The thirty-minute boat tours leaving from Rozenhoedkaai or the Burg add a different angle on the city for nine euros and are easy to slot in. Schedule it between the Belfry and the Minnewater stops so the hunt keeps a natural flow. The challenges all work without the boat.
