Lesson: Art Appreciation Walk

An active art lesson for small teams (groep 7-8 / ages 10-12). Walk through any town and hunt for public art: statues, murals, sculptures, mosaics. Teams photograph what they find and learn to look closely, describe what they see and guess what materials and techniques were used. Works in any town with public art.

Find a statue or sculpture in your town. Photograph the whole piece. Try to figure out from a sign or plaque who or what it represents.

Hunt for a mural, graffiti piece or wall painting. Photograph the whole work, then take a close-up of one detail you find interesting.

Find mosaic or tile art (small pieces forming a bigger picture or pattern). Photograph it and try to count how many different colors of tiles you can see.

Find a statue with a clear pose. As a team, imitate the pose exactly next to the statue and take a photo. Two of you copying, the rest framing the shot.

Find an artwork that is only in black, white or grey (a sculpture, a black-and-white mural, a printed poster). Photograph it.

Find a small detail in a public artwork that most people walk past without noticing (a face hidden in a pattern, a tiny figure, a hidden symbol). Photograph the detail close-up.
